TAT Broth

TAT (Trypton-Azolectin-Tween®) Broth is recommended for sterility testing of viscous materials, such as shampoo, cosmetics, salves, or ointments.  It is especially adapted to the sterility testing of cosmetics and pharmaceutical products, which are subject to contamination during manufacturing and use by consumers.  Preservatives are used in aqueous products to make them self-sterilizing for vegetative bacteria, yeasts, and molds.  Pancreatic digest of casein provides the nitrogen, vitamins, amino acids, and carbon in CRITERION™ TAT Broth Base.  Lecithin neutralizes preservatives in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical products, allowing bacteria to grow.  Hardy’s TAT Broth is available in many different sizes and containers.

Letheen Agar

Letheen Agar is used for the evaluation of bactericidal activity of quaternary ammonium compounds and is formulated according to regulartory guidelines.  The medium contains beef extract and peptone to provide a nutrient rich medium supporting the growth of a variety of microorganisms.  Quaternary ammonia compounds are neutralized by lecithin while phenolic disinfectants and hexachlorophene are neutralized by Tween® 80.  Together, lecithin and Tween® 80 neutralize ethanol.  Letheen agar is specified for use by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) in the Standard Test Method for Preservatives in Water Containing Cosmetics.
