The Duck Hunt
A medical student, an internist, a psychiatrist, a surgeon and a pathologist go duck hunting.
They barely find their duck blind before the first duck flies over. The medical student is the first to raise his shotgun, but unable to tell if the duck is really a duck, he is afraid to shoot.
The internist aims his shotgun, but can not tell if the duck is male or female and he decides to wait and see.
The psychiatrist has the duck framed in his sight, but then lowers his shotgun, claiming "I know this is a duck, but does the duck know he's a duck?" He cannot shoot.
The surgeon quickly raises his shotgun, aims, and without hesitation shoots. The duck falls dead to the ground.
The surgeon turns to the pathologist and says "Go figure out if that's a duck or not."

I

Everyone is born with one. It is unique to humans and not found in most mammals. So why do we have one?
Researchers at Duke University have recently postulated that the human
appendix
serves as a sort of bacterial "
safe house
". Commensal bacteria thrive within the biofilms of the epithelial lining of the appendix and stand by, ready to re-populate the intestines if there is a diarrheal infection that flushes out the normal flora of the gut.
The opening of the appendix is no larger than a pencil lead. The bacteria "on reserve" are ready to be released into the large intestine to replenish friendly bacteria after times of GI disease.
Certainly not a reason to keep an inflamed appendix, but it points to the belief that everything in the body is there for a purpose!
