New Regulations...

Having difficulty in buying Iodine?
______

iodine bottle

Due to recent federal and state regulations, many labs are finding it difficult to buy iodine that is needed for gram staining and parasitology procedures.

Iodine is now a tightly controlled substance due to its illegal use in the manufacturing of methamphetamines.

Hardy Diagnostics is fully licensed by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to sell iodine to qualified end users in the laboratory.

  • Why does the word monosyllabic contain five syllables?
  • If you wear antennae to a wedding, would the reception be better?
  • Why is abbreviated such a long word?

A prehistoric brew..

Fossil Fuel

fossil fuel

Aged for 45 million years? Now there's a beer that is brewed from yeast isolated from prehistoric amber that is about 45 million years old.

Dr. Raul Cano of San Luis Obispo, California, has done extensive research on amber from the Eocene period. In 1995, he isolated and revived a bacterium from the gut of a bee encased in amber (petrified tree sap). During his research, Dr. Cano isolated a few yeast strains that resembled the modern Saccharomyces cerevisiae; similar to the yeast we use every day for brewing and baking. Essentially, Dr. Cano isolated the long lost ancestors of modern brewing yeast. That same yeast strain is used in the production of the new brew known as "Fossil Fuel."

Amber was first studied in 1856 and yielded 163 species of ancient plant life.

amber

More than a century later, amber came to the forefront again with the advent of gene sequencing and cloning. A 1982 paper by entomologist George Poinar explored the potential for extracting DNA from preserved creatures. The paper caused a stir in the scientific community and inspired Michael Crichton to write his best-selling dinosaur-cloning novel, Jurassic Park , which came out in 1990 and was followed by a blockbuster movie.

Perhaps the isolation and revitalization of organisms from amber will someday be more than just a novelty. Could new antibiotics derived from ancient DNA be more effective having never been exposed to resistant organisms? Researchers like Dr. Cano keep exploring the possibilities that are entrapped in the tiny time capsules of amber.

Born: 1918

"It always seems impossible until its done."

"A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination."

"Money won't create success, the freedom to make it will."

"After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb."

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

"I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man."

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."

"There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children."

"There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires."

"There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living."

"We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right."
