Cholera Outbreak in Haiti
More then 250 Haitians have died recently and another 3,000 have been infected with
Vibrio cholera
. The outbreak has occurred in a rural refugee camp where over one million homeless earthquake victims have been living in tents or under tarps.
It is feared that the spread of cholera to the capital city Port-au-Prince, with a population of 1.3 million, would be devastating. Cholera, caused by the bacterium,
Vibrio cholera
, produces severe diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and dehydration known at times to kill within a matter of hours.
Detection of Vibrio is best accomplished by culturing stool and looking for yellow colonies on
TCBS Agar
. Serotyping can be determined with
antisera
.
Treatment usually includes oral or IV re-hydration with salt and dextrose solutions. Antibiotics, such as tetracycline, may or may not be used. If patients are treated quickly and properly the mortality rate is less than 1%; with untreated cases the mortality rate can rise to 50-60%.

Think about it...
-
If one synchronized swimmer drowns, must the others drown as well?
-
What should you do if you see an endangered animal eating an endangered plant?
-
If a man is standing in the middle of the forest speaking and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?
-
If you asked a librarian where the books on "self help" were, should she tell you?
