At Hardy Diagnostics we get many phone calls from microbiologists who are having a difficult time in locating those "hard to find" reagents and rapid test kits. As a result, we put all of our reagents, disks, and kits in a single 18-page catalog for your convenience.

New Media for Prostate Biopsies
Hardy now makes a new screening plate for testing rectal flora before a prostate biopsy. Urologists often use ciprofloxacin as a prophylactic before taking a needle biopsy of the prostate gland through the rectum. It is useful to know if organisms are present that are resistant to ciprofloxacin, since serious infections may result from the biopsy puncture.

Question:
What can cause a skin infection like this as a result of being in ocean water?
Hint:
It has been known to kill the ocean bather in as little as two and half days!

Here's a fun one, but you have to control your eyes in order to control the beans. Move your eyes from corner to corner and the beans will rotate. Stare directly in the middle without moving your eyes and the beans will stop rotating!

Are drones an acceptable way to fight the war on terrorism?
In 2000, the Pentagon had fewer than fifty aerial drones; ten years later, it had a fleet of nearly 7,500, and the US Air Force now trains more drone "pilots" than bomber and fighter pilots combined. Drones are already a $5 billion business in the US alone. Drone strikes have killed about 5,000 people so far. The civilian death rate has been estimated to be anywhere from 8 to 34%.
Today, nearly a third of all US warplanes are flying robots, and there are 11 other countries that posses armed drones as well
.
Are drone strikes, and the inevitable civilian casualties associated with them, a necessary and unavoidable part of the war on terror; or is it a police action that deprives the victim of due process of law and perhaps violates international law?

Do the benefits of fracking
outweigh the risks?
Opponents point to potential
environmental
impacts, including contamination of
ground water
, depletion of
fresh water
, increase in green house gas, risks to
air quality
, noise pollution, the migration of gases and chemicals to the surface, and the
health effects
they may cause.
Proponents say that the U.S. could be energy self sufficient by 2020 if we took advantage of the fracking technology. The impact of fracking has already been felt. According to the Energy Department, the U.S. imported 41% of its oil in the first five months of 2013, down from 65% in 2005.

The mystery of the
ageless 14 year old burger
Most of us have heard the story of Dave Whipple who set aside a McDonalds burger back in 1999. Now, 14 years later, the petrified burger looks about the same (recent photo above) as it did hot off the grill. The microbiologists are saying...What? No bacteria? No mold? Many have concluded that the McDonalds burger is either so full of preservatives or so devoid of nutrition that microorganisms will refuse to dine on it.
Or could it be that the burger was so dry that microorganisms could not thrive?
J. Kenji López-Alt decided to test the latter hypothesis by placing a McDonald's burger in a zip-lock bag, thus preventing it from drying out. Sure enough, seven days later, bacteria and mold feasted on the moist burger (photo below) and thus began their happy meal of decomposition. Mystery solved, and science triumphs...I'm lovin' it!

Part 1
I've Learned...
by Andy Rooney
American journalist
1919 ~ 2011
I've learned....
that the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.
I've learned....
that just one person saying to me, "You've made my day!" makes my day.
I've learned....
that having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.
I've learned....
that being kind is more important than being right.
I've learned....
that you should never say no to a gift from a child.
I've learned....
that I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way.
I've learned....
that sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to
understand.
I've learned....
that simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I
was a child did wonders for me as an adult.
I've learned....
that life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end,
the faster it goes.
I've learned....
that we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.
I've learned....
that money doesn't buy class.
