Doing your homework. . .
I
t's that time of year again, when parents and children are getting ready to head back to school. Besides stocking up on new books, school supplies, and preparing for the rigors of homework, parents should also think about making sure children are properly vaccinated. This includes infants all the way up to college-age kids.
Public schools generally require students to be up-to-date on immunizations, but some parents still opt out, delay vaccinations, or may be unaware of the dangers of living in close quarters (e.g. dorms, armed services). Navigating what's best for you or your family in today's world can often feel like crossing a mine field: all it takes is one sensationalized news report or article to sound the alarm bell. Knowing your options and staying up-to-date on current research helps to reduce misinformation and fear. So does knowing who to trust and where to turn when there are questions or concerns.
What's hard for most of our nation to remember is that the U.S., including most of the nation's medical professionals, have not witnessed an epidemic of a deadly or crippling infectious agent like diphtheria, small pox, measles, polio or pertussis in their lifetime. During this period, we have grown complacent and, with that false sense of security, we may risk our children or grand-children's health. We may even risk our own. With the ability to travel the globe within a matter of hours, we are no longer living safe in our disease-free corner of the world.
So, in addition to nutritious lunches, new backpacks, and new clothes, consider the resources below as helpful when sending those eager minds out the door for their first day of school. Search for additional information on immunizations through your state's Department of Health.

Origami Microscopes
for 50 Cents!
Over 600,000 people will die from malaria this year. Can malaria be diagnosed using a 50 cent paper microscope? Manu Prakash, PhD at Stanford University thinks so. His amazing invention, the Foldscope, uses a tiny spherical lens illuminated by an LED source housed within a foldable paper platform...all for a cost of about 50 cents!
It requires no external power source, it is completely portable, it can be dropped or stepped on with no adverse effect, and can be assembled within 20 minutes. The specimens are mounted on a standard microscope slide and will be magnified by 2,000 times with the Foldscope. The images can even be projected on a wall!
