For beta lactamase testing...

Nitrocef
Matchbook

Nitrocef Matchbook

Hardy Diagnostics offers a more convenient way of testing ß-lactamase activity in bacteria. It is especially useful for the susceptibility testing of anaerobes.

The Nitrocef MatchBook™ is a rapid test that allows you to quickly pick your colonies and perform the test at the same time! Easier and faster than a disk! You can read out in as little as five minutes in most cases.

The rapid Nitrocef test consists of a paper match-stick that is impregnated with the Nitrocefin reagent, which is a chromogenic cephalosporin. This rapid test can yield clinically relevant information earlier than an MIC test.

A positive ß-lactamase test can predict resistance to such antibiotics as penicillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin, and other ß-lactamase containing drugs for the following organisms:

* Neisseria gonorrhoeae
* Haemophilus spp.
* Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis
* Staphylococcus spp.
* Enterococcus spp.
* Anaerobes (such as some species of Bacteroides, Porphyromonas, Clostridium, Fusobacterium, Prevotella )

The rapid Nitrocef MatchBookTM can be used for all of the above organisms with results in five minutes or less, with the exception of some Staphylococcu s spp. that may take up to one hour.

Phraseology
"Pull the Wool
Over One's Eyes"

This phrase, meaning to deceive someone, comes from the fashionable practice of men and women wearing woolen wigs in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The use of wigs originally started when people shaved their heads to prevent head lice. later, wigs were used to make up for a lack of hair due to baldness. The wigs were usually not made of wool and were more likely to be made from human, horse, goat, or yak hair.

The earliest example that can be found for this phrase in print is from the Milwaukee Daily Sentinel and Gazette , October 1839:

"And we ask one question that they dare not firmly answer, whether they are not now making a tolerable attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of the people."

Think about it...

The Thinker

* If women wear a pair of pants, a pair of glasses, and a pair of
earrings, why don't they wear a pair of bras?

* How come you never hear about gruntled employees?

* What is a "free" gift? Aren't all gifts free?

* After eating, do amphibians have to wait one hour before getting out of the water?

* If white wine goes with fish, do white grapes go with sushi?

A year ago, Hardy Diagnostics became an employee-owned company. The common term for this is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Program). After a certain length of service, all employees become stockholders of the corporation.

Wisdom to ponder...

Thomas a Kempis

"Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be."

"First keep peace with yourself, then you can also bring peace to others."

"Be assured that if you knew all, you would pardon all."

"What else does anxiety about the future bring you but sorrow upon sorrow?"

"How quickly passes away the glory of this world."

"How seldom we weigh our neighbor in the same balance with ourselves."

"The only safe ruler is he who has learned to obey willingly."

"A wise lover values not so much the gift of the lover as the love of the giver."

"Never be entirely idle; but either be reading, or writing, or praying or meditating or endeavoring something for the public good."

Retail Microbiology?
___________________________________

Now the public can order a microbiome profile on themselves through the internet. For fees ranging from $89 to $15,000, personalized cultures and genetic studies on the organisms that have taken up housekeeping on various body parts can be received by the inquiring public.

From the website of American Gut, which offers to detail the microbiome inside your body.

Currently there are two organizations that offer such a service: American Gut (a research project from the University of Colorado, Boulder) and uBiome (a San Francisco start-up company).

uBiome claims to be practicing "citizen science," which they claim is " scientific research conducted by non-professional scientists, often by crowd-sourcing. " For $399, they will microbiologically characterize your gut, skin, genitals, mouth, and nose. Their website is somewhat vague on how this will be done.

From the Facebook page of uBiome in San Francisco .

American Gut focuses on the oral and intestinal microbiome and claims to have analyzed samples from  over 7,000 participants. They have raised over $400,000 in donations.

Will "do it yourself" microbiology become as routine as ordering products from Amazon? Who is interpreting the results of these tests? What is the benefit of characterizing your personal microbiome? The answers may be forthcoming in the future. Regardless of the accuracy and benefit, one thing is certain: there is money to be made on the inquiring mind of John Q. Public.

Should the Federal
Minimum Wage be Raised?

The federal minimum wage required by law is currently $7.25 per hour and has been since 2009. However, many states have laws that vary from this.  The green states above have a minimum wage higher than the federal one, while the blue states are the same, red states are lower, and the orange states have no minimum wage law.

What do you think....Is the Federal minimum wage law too high, too low, or just right?
