Bacteria Found in Placentas

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas have made the remarkable discovery of a diverse population of bacteria living in human placentas without causing disease.

Infants pick up vaginal bacteria during childbirth, but the puzzling problem for researchers is the the vaginal bacteria did not match the bacteria found in the GI tract of newborns.

The answer as to where this "seeding" was coming from was found in 320 donated placentas. Using DNA studies, low levels of several types of bacteria were found including E. coli and organisms commonly found in the mouth.

Scientists theorize that oral bacteria can enter the mother's bloodstream and thus colonize the placenta without harming the fetus.

Wisdom to ponder...

Elon Musk

South African-born Canadian-American entrepreneur and inventor. Co-founder of PayPal, SpaceX, and Tesla Motors. Currently CEO of Tesla and SpaceX.

On innovation: "Failure is an option here. If things are not failing, you are not innovating enough."

On the future : "There's a fundamental difference, if you look into the future, between a humanity that is a space-faring civilization, that's out there exploring the stars ... compared with one where we are forever confined to Earth until some eventual extinction event."

On ideas: "Physics is a good framework for thinking. ... Boil things down to their fundamental truths and reason up from there."

On hiring: "My biggest mistake is probably weighing too much on someone's talent and not someone's personality. I think it matters whether someone has a good heart."

On risk taking: "If something is important enough, even if the odds are against you, you should still do it."

On his childhood experiments: "It is remarkable how many things you can explode. I'm lucky I have all my fingers."

On product development: "You want to be extra rigorous about making the best possible thing you can. Find everything that's wrong with it and fix it. Seek negative feedback, particularly from friends."

On motive: "Going from PayPal, I thought: 'Well, what are some of the other problems that are likely to most affect the future of humanity?' Not from the perspective, 'What's the best way to make money?'"

Pine Tree Filters

A simple and cheap solution for providing clean water in underdeveloped nations?

Pine nuts, furniture, paper, Christmas decor, the buildings we inhabit, and the lovely smell of the mountain air - what do these things all have in common? They all exist thanks to our old friend, the pine tree.

Many of these items are present in our everyday lives, but now there's another big one to add to this list: potable drinking water.

A recent study published in PLOS (Boutilier et al.) showed that the xylem tissue from pine trees was successful in removing at least 99.9% of bacteria from water when used as a filter.

UNICEF reports that 748 million people in the world do not have access to safe, clean drinking water and that approximately 1,400 children die per day from disease caused by unsafe water or inadequate sanitation. Current methods for water disinfection are expensive or impractical for small towns and villages in developing countries, making a new method of water disinfection that could be used in such places a huge breakthrough in the prevention of water borne disease.

So how does this work? The researchers used 1 inch long sections of pine branches that were about 1 cm in diameter. The bark was removed, and this piece of branch was then inserted into the end of tubing and sealed. Water was filtered through this tubing and traveled through the xylem tissue of the branch with a small amount of pressure to help it through. This method is not only suitable for pine trees, but all coniferous trees are good candidates based on the pattern of flow through the pit membranes in the xylem tissue. The research showed that these pit membranes are responsible for the trapping of bacteria, just like they trap tiny air bubbles that can kill the tree.

A color enhanced electron microscope image from MIT showing the round xylem pit membranes (red and blue) with E. coli bacteria (green) trapped inside.

Organisms and particles down to approximately 100nm in size could be filtered using this method and filtering in this way can provide the amount of drinking water required for one person each day, which is about four liters.

There are clear issues associated with this new method of filtration that will need to be addressed prior to becoming a viable technology - such as the presence of coniferous trees in areas of the world that need clean water, the limit of water that can be filtered in this way, and still the 0.01% of bacteria that can get through as well as smaller viruses that might evade filtration - but if you're ever stuck in the mountains surrounded by pines and happen to have some tubing in your pocket, you just might not get sick from drinking the water.

Take our survey.

..
? Should all new patients be screened for MRSA?

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) continues to be a serious problem plaguing hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Studies show that 2% of the population harbors MRSA in their nasal passages. Currently there are about 80,000 cases annually of MRSA as Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI). Compared to the numbers in 2005, the rate of infection has been cut in half; so some progress is being made. The cost of added surveillance can be burdensome to hospitals already strapped for money. However, the cost of an average MRSA infection in the hospital is $14,000. Should all incoming hospital patients be screened for MRSA so that isolation measures can be taken?
