Phraseology

"You can't teach an old dog new tricks"

This is one of the oldest phrases in the English language, having its first recorded origin in a book on animal husbandry in 1523 that said "an old dog will learn no tricks."

How much truth is

in this old saying?

Neuroscientists at MIT and Massachusetts General Hospital found that we peak, intellecutally speaking, at different ages depending on the task at hand.

For example, raw speed in processing information appears to peak around age 18 or 19 and then immediately starts to decline. Meanwhile, short-term memory continues to improve until around age 25 when it levels off and then begins to drop around age 35.

For the ability to evaluate other people's emotional states, the peak occurred much later in the 40s or 50s.

While some IQ tests suggest that vocabulary peaks in the late 40s, new data showed a later peak, occurring in the late 60s or early 70s.

Maybe there's a lot to be said for old dogs after all.

Wisdom to ponder...

Walt Whitman

1819  ~  1892

Known as America's "first poet of democracy." Although an essayist and journalist, he is best known for his book of poetry "Leaves of Grass."

"Let your soul stand cool and composed before a million universes."

"Keep your face always toward the sunshine - and shadows will fall behind you."

"Every moment of light and dark is a miracle."

"I no doubt deserved my enemies, but I don't believe I deserved my friends."

"The future is no more uncertain than the present."

"The genius of the United States is not best or most in its executives or legislatures, nor in its ambassadors or authors or colleges, or churches, or parlors, nor even in its newspapers or inventors, but always most in the common people."

"Now I see the secret of making the best person: it is to grow in the open air and to eat and sleep with the earth."

"There is no week nor day nor hour when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their roughness and spirit of defiance."

"Happiness is not another place but this place....not for another hour, but for this hour."

"Re-examine all that you have been told... dismiss that which insults your soul."

Optical oddities...

Who do you see?

If you see Albert Einstein, then you probably have good vision. If you see Marilyn Monroe, you might want to get your eyes checked.

Aude Oliva from MIT created this hybrid image to test eyesight at different distances. The further you move back from your screen the image of Marilyn will become more distinct.

Highlights from the 2015
ASM Conference in New Orleans

Fecal bacteria on your toothbrush?
Researchers at the Quinnipiac University found that 60% of the toothbrushes tested contained fecal bacteria, when a bathroom is shared, such as in a dorm situation. There is an 80% chance that the bacteria came from someone other than the owner. The American Dental Association offers some advice on how to prevent toothbrush contamination.

Spoiled beer is common with microbreweries
Researchers at the University of Houston found that many bottles of beer from four out of ten microbreweries contained spoilage microorganisms in the brew. It was found that these small craft breweries do not perform quality control to detect contamination and thus were not aware of the problem. Universal Beer Agar or Barney Miller Medium are two types of media that can be utilized to detect such organisms of spoilage.

Cinnamon can neutralize viruses
Researchers at New York School of Career and Applied Studies found that cinnamon was effective in blocking the infectious ability of viruses and may be useful in preventing colds and flu in humans. Tests with onion, garlic, cloves, peppermint, cocoa, and saffron had no such effect on the virus they tested.

Bacteria sleeping on the job?
Researchers at Indiana University found that up to 90% of the bacteria on human skin is either dormant or dead. They hypothesized that this is due to either a lack of nutrients or moisture. Another theory is that the bacteria have developed a means to escape detection by the immune system.

Bacteria under contact lenses described
Researchers at the New York University School of Medicine found that the bacteria on the cornea is quite different with contact lens wearers. They are more likely to have bacteria commonly found on the fingers or eye lids. Pseudomonas was three times more likely to be found with contact lens wearers. This is a common cause of keratitis (infection of the cornea). Contact lens wearers are 80 times more likely to experience keratitis (example shown below).

New Reference Guide for

Clinical Microbiologists!

Two new reference guides released!

Gideon Guide to
Antimicrobial Agents, 2015

Useful and practical  information on 303 anti-infective drugs at your fingertips!

As of 2015, the fields of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease are challenged by over 3,000 species of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Currently, over 300 drugs are available to battle these pathogens, each with a unique pharmacology, spectrum of activity, testing standards, and range of toxicities.

Gideon Guide to Antimicrobial Agents, 2015 contains 875 pages as a 10.95 MB PDF file.  Since this is an e-book, users can rapidly access a specific drug by name or trade name (currently 25,000  listed) using standard search tools.  The text includes drugs which are available in only one or two countries and rare historical content on agents which have not been used since the 1950s.

The first of three sections in the book lists drugs by class and indication; the second is an A-to-Z guide by disease name; and the third is an exhaustive description of each individual agent: Mechanism of action, Typical dosage for adult or child, Details of metabolism, elimination and penetration into various body fluids, Toxicity (185 forms of toxicity), Drug-Drug interactions (558 interactive drugs), Spectrum (including Disc zone diameter and breakpoint standards), and Trade names.

Gideon Guide to
Medically-Important Yeasts, 2015

The clinical and laboratory characteristics of 119 yeast taxa associated with human specimens.

The book is an A-to-Z reference that summarizes the practical features of all yeasts associated with human medicine.  This exhaustive text includes distinctive laboratory characteristics, ecology and clinical significance, previous taxonomic designations ("synonyms"), and full phenotype (biochemical reactions).

As of 2015, 119 yeast taxa have been associated with human disease.  The advent of Intensive Care and expanding range of immune suppression (AIDS, transplantation, cancer chemotherapy) has contributed to an expanding range of yeast pathogens and disease syndromes.

Gideon Guide to Medically-Important Yeasts, 2015 contains 131 pages as a 1.08 MB PDF.  The text includes taxa which have been described in only a single country, or even a single patient.  For each taxon, the ecology and disease association are described, followed by typical phenotype and drug susceptibility pattern, and a listing of older taxonomic designations (921 names as of 2015).
