What's lurking in your mouth?

The Three Stages of Tooth Decay

Tooth decay

1 . Streptococcus gordonii , S. oralis and others settle on the teeth and form plaque. This happens within four hours of brushing your teeth. This is the beginning of a biofilm formation, in which different species cooperate and communicate with each other to form a symbiotic relationship.
S. gordonii

2 . Streptococcus mutans arrives about 24 hours later. It binds to the first layer of bacteria and produces lactic acid that eats away at tooth enamel. The biofilm grows and matures at this time; due to the sticky substance that S. mutans produces.

3 . Lactobacillus casei and related bacteria take over after several days to accelerate and deepen the damage done to the tooth surface.

The above sequence reminds us of the importance of good dental hygiene, which includes both brushing and flossing. This also helps to prevent gum disease (gingivitis). The main culprit here is the bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis .

Wisdom to ponder...

Jack Welch

Jack Welch

Author and former CEO of General Electric

"Change before you have to."

"We've only been wealthy in this country for 70 years. Who said we ought to have all this? Is it ordained?"

"Willingness to change is a strength, even if it means plunging part of the company into total confusion for a while."

"Control your own destiny or someone else will."

"Face reality as it is, not as it was or as you wish it to be."

"I was afraid of the internet... because I couldn't type."

"I've learned that mistakes can often be as good a teacher as success."

"If you don't have a competitive advantage, don't compete."

"We bring together the best ideas - turning the meetings of our top managers into intellectual orgies."
